UN Sustainable Goals



The Sustainable Development Goals or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all". The SDGs were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly and are intended to be achieved by the year 2030 -Wikipedia 


Towards a New Perspective is a great resource on the Resources for Thinking website 

  • This inter-disciplinary resource is one of four teacher's guides based on David Suzuki's film, "Force of Nature".  This guide focuses on different world views concerning stewardship of our planet- especially those held by Aboriginal Peoples. The lesson plans make a number of links between the film that is based on Suzuki's" Legacy Lecture 2010" and the high school curriculum.

    Students explore the relationship between humans and the environment, examine Aboriginal views of nature, and then incorporate these ideas into a plan for a more sustainable future. Through video analysis, they identify 'common ground" emerging among Aboriginal peoples, religious leaders and scientists as to our place in the environment and examine how TEK and Western Science are contributing to an understanding and resolution of environmental crisis. The resource stresses that although humans have altered the physical and chemical integrity of the planet, these same qualities have made humanity a "force of nature" that can bring about a more meaningful future. In the final activity, students are asked to outline and implement an action plan which addresses an environmental issue.


Mission: Gender Equality

  • I think this is another great lesson plan as several health teachers kind of try and avoid teaching the different genders when discussing sexuality with their students...and it mostly has to do with two reasons (1) they are uncomfortable with the material because they are not certain how to approach it or that they are knowledgable enough to answer questions the students may ask (2) they are not comfortable themselves with the different genders that exist now and are confused by it themselves.
  • I will admit in my own past I have had my moments of misunderstanding and passing judgements because I didn't understand who someone was...and honestly it took me watching RuPaul's drag race and hearing the stories that some of the contestants have gone through and the struggles that each of them face within themselves and within their families made me really recognize that I had been passing judgement and to see that the LGBTQ+ community really is not treated with the respect that they deserve...so having lesson plans available to us such as this one will go along way in making our schools and classes more equitable and help to eliminate gender inequalities that are still seen in society
